Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali has received a suspended two-month ban for violating the FA’s betting regulations on 50 occasions. Tonali, who transferred from AC Milan for £55 million last summer, had already been serving a ban for betting on matches in Italy until August 2024. However, he faced additional charges for placing bets on football matches between August 12, 2023, and October 12, 2023, after joining Newcastle.

The suspension, applicable until the conclusion of the 2024/25 season, allows Tonali to participate in football activities unless he commits another breach. In such a case, he would serve the full two-month ban. He has also been fined £20,000 and cautioned about his future behavior by the FA.

Newcastle issued a statement acknowledging Tonali’s exceptional cooperation with the investigation. They highlighted his proactive approach to self-referring and fully cooperating with the authorities, describing it as unprecedented.

“Sandro made full admissions as to his betting activity and did so in circumstances where there was no other evidence to support misconduct proceedings.”

“Sandro is continuing to follow a therapeutic plan and educational programme with the club’s full support and will continue to train with his teammates.”
